To save PC back panel real estate on notebooks, PC OEMs want to replace the VGA connector with DisplayPort output. Even without a VGA connector on a notebook, there is a need to communicate with existing monitors, projectors and other display interfaces that take VGA input. Hence, OEMs are shipping DisplayPort to VGA adapters (dongles) with the notebooks for consumers. Current chipsets support VGA; however in the near future chipset manufacturers may stop supporting VGA altogether because of its slow speed and analog architecture. In this case also, there will be a need for DisplayPort to VGA adapters to enable a PC to talk to all the display interfaces that support VGA.
