Some DACs are better suited for closed loop systems, while others are better for open loop systems. A pair of Analog Devices' 16-bit DACs illustrate the difference in this slide. The LTC2641 and LTC2601 are both 16-bit monotonic single voltage output DACs in tiny packages. The LTC2641 offers a maximum of ±1 LSB INL and ±1 LSB DNL over the full temperature range. The LTC2601 offers a maximum of ±1 LSB DNL and ±64 LSB INL over the full temperature range. Both the LTC2601 and LTC2641 guarantee monotonicity with their ±1 LSB DNL specification. However, the LTC2641 is better suited for open loop applications with its ±1 LSB INL, while the LTC2601’s INL makes it a better fit for a closed loop systems.
