LightWare laser rangefinder offers unmatched precision and compact design for extended 250-meter sensing

Image of LightWare LiDAR GRF-250 Laser RangefinderLightWare LiDAR GRF-250 is an extremely light 250 m laser rangefinder offering advanced capabilities to enhance intelligence, surveillance, security, and search-and-rescue operations in a compact form.

The GRF-250 is designed for seamless integration with EO/IR gimbals, adding reliable ranging and depth perception while enabling precise object localization.

Utilizing a 905 nm laser, it delivers accurate distance measurements up to 820 ft (250 m) using time-of-flight laser pulsing. It easily and accurately performs at its maximum range on low-reflectivity objects, like trees, and has the ability to detect multiple objects in its field of view.

With excellent sensor performance and compliance with 1M eye safety standards, the GRF-250 is ideal for low-altitude deployments in diverse environments, from wildlife management to crowd monitoring.

LightWare is renowned for its compact, high-performance sensors, delivering excellent performance at the lowest possible weight within a form factor that is easy to integrate. Building on LightWare proven reputation for ultralight sensors, GRF-250 is engineered to deliver all the performance customers need from a laser rangefinder, with the best balance of size, weight, features, and cost.

At only 0.38 oz (10.65 g) the GRF-250 brings laser range-finding abilities aboard a drone’s gimbal sensor payload without burdening flight endurance or agility. The compact 32 mm x 31 mm x 20 mm (1.3" x 1.2" x 0.8") dimensions create ease of integration with EO/IR gimbals and help to make better compact drone builds possible, ideal for those complex search and rescue or security missions in challenging and hazardous spaces.

For security, wildlife management, or search and rescue, many critical drone flights are at low altitudes. Ravines, collapsed structures, and forests are terrain examples where compact drones are preferable because of collision risk. The GRF-250 allows EO/IR gimbal specialists and drone customers to choose a solution tailored to their needs, with an ultralight mid-distance laser rangefinder that seamlessly becomes part of the gimbal sensor payload.

Recognizing the demanding weather conditions where security, conservation, or rescue teams need to operate drones, the GRF-250’s front face features an IP67 waterproof rating, and LightWare build quality ensures product integrity. The GRF-250 is assembled by specialist LightWare technicians using a process benchmarked to ISO9001 standards.

Features
  • Reliable laser rangefinding capabilities over distances from 0.6 ft to 820 ft (0.2 m to 250 m), making this an extremely light 250 m lidar
  • The LightWare GRF-250 easily and accurately performs at its maximum range on low-reflectivity objects, like trees, and has the ability to detect multiple objects in its field of view
  • The GRF-250 uses industry-standard communications protocols to ensure effortless integration of the LiDAR sensor to any system, unlocking options for sensor fusion across a wide variety of applications
  • ISO9001 certified, ensuring consistently reliable performance of products
  • Small size: 32 mm x 31 mm x 20 mm (1.3" x 1.2" x 0.8")
  • Specifically designed for integration into space-constrained gimbals
  • Ultralight at 10.65 g (0.376 oz)
  • The perfect sensor for demanding applications with strict weight constraints
  • GRF-250 detects both the first and last objects in its line of sight to help penetrate foliage from treetops or through environmental conditions like mist, dust, rain, and snow
  • Wavelength: 905 nm
  • Update rate: 1 to 50 readings per second (customizable to suit application)
  • Accuracy: ±50 cm/±19.6 in (1 sigma)
  • Multiple target discrimination: max 5
  • Interfaces: serial UART and I2C (3.3 V TTL, 5 V tolerant)
  • Operating temperature: -20°C to +60°C (-4°F to +140°F)
Applications
  • Gimbal rangefinding: Gimbal rangefinding involves integrating the GRF-250 into an EO/IR (electro-optical/Infrared) gimbal, delivering crucial depth perception information to the system, enhancing the functionality of camera systems, and enabling precise localization of observed objects
  • Above ground level: provides the range and precision needed for above ground level (AGL) which is critical to UAV operations in order to ensure compliance with height restrictions imposed by aviation authorities. AGL also assists with the scaling of objects in photogrammetry and is critical in inspection and surveillance applications by allowing drones to hover in place
  • Terrain following: With the LightWare microLiDAR® sensor mounted in a downward-facing orientation, it keeps track of changes in topography. This terrain following, or terrain awareness, allows UAVs to take appropriate action to maintain their height above ground for applications in agriculture, mapping, and geosciences
  • Security: used to provide invisible perimeter security solutions for detecting intrusions and unauthorized movements as well as triggering area-denial actions
